As i walked into a coffee shop, I happened to overhear a conversation between a kid and his dad that went on something like this :
Kid: Dad, can i play with your laptop?
Dad: no way! have your food soon. You have lots to study today!
Kid(trying to act studious) : Don't you worry! By the way, how does the computer function? I mean, how can you get so much data on the net? Where does it come from?!
Dad: <gulp!> Just finish your food! You are exactly like your mom! asking all complicated questions!
Being a computer science engineer, i couldn't resist and was very keen to explain the whole concept of the computer architecture to a kid in simple words! yes, its not all that complicated folks!
I walked towards the table where the kid was gulping down the softdrink and his dad was busy working on his laptop. I generally love kids and it was all too easy to start off a conversation with the kid. His dad didn't seem to complain as the kid wouldn't bother him anymore!
Kid: what do you do ? Which class are you in ?
Me: <laughing out loud> Hey i work ! Am a software engineer and i work on computers and laptops! Its quite cool you see!
Kid: Wow! I really wanna know how the computer gets all the data and stuff! Dad is too busy to tell me!
Me: Well, its actually very easy kid! Do you play games on the net with your friends?
Kid: yes! i love playing fifa and beating them!
Me: Good! Just to illustrate the working of the whole thing, imagine the guy who created the game fifa as the hub who has a huge computer! You guys, as in you and your friend, just connect to it, to run the game simultaneously! Here, the creator of the game acts as a server and your guys act as clients!
Kid: server ?? client ??
Me: Look! Server is like a super computer that has all the data and information in it. Clients are small computers, like your dad's laptop, who actually connect to the server.
Kid: But how do you connect to the "server" ?
Me: Good question! :) You have internet! You connect to the server through the net! Connection could be wired, where you use a cable to connect to the server or wireless !
Kid: Wireless? How is that even possible?
Me: <damn! This kid really does ask a lot of question!> Hey kid, i have to leave now! Catch u soon someday! Good luck with your studies!
As i leave the table in embarrassment, I see the kid's dad grin ! I wave goodbye and leave the scene in a hurry! :)
